What kind of fur coat do you need for winter

A winter fur coat has a simple job: to protect you from cold and wind without turning every trip outside into an ordeal. So choose it not from a picture but by four practical signs.

The first is length: the more of your body the coat covers, the less you freeze. The second is the density and quality of the fur. The third is lining and insulation, which are often forgotten. The fourth is fit: a coat in which you cannot raise your arm or sit down will annoy you, not warm you.

One more question is how you live in winter. If you are almost always in a car, one coat is enough. If you walk, take public transport and wait at stops, you need something different. Start with an honest answer to that.

Which fur coat is the warmest

There is no universal “warmest” fur, and promises like “keeps you warm in any frost” should be treated with caution. A coat's warmth comes from several things.

Density of the fur: the thicker and denser it is, the less wind gets through. Length: a floor-length coat covers more than a jacket. Lining: it matters more than it seems, so ask the consultant what it is. Fit: there should be a small layer of air between coat and body, not skin-tight and not loose like a sack. And, of course, what you wear underneath.

Karakul in winter: what to know

Karakul is a short, dense fur with a curl pattern. Such fur is generally light and hard-wearing, so the coat does not weigh on your shoulders.

Dense short fur holds warmth well enough, and its light weight makes a karakul coat comfortable in the city — in the car, on transport, in shops. If you specifically want a fluffy coat with long pile, we will say plainly: we do not have that fur. We have specialised in Bukhara karakul since 1998 and receive it directly from Bukhara.

Winter coat length: jacket, mantle or full-length

On cold days length decides a lot. The Luxury Furs collection offers three options.

The straight-cut, floor-length Noir gives the most protection from wind: a choice for those who walk a lot outdoors and want the cold to stay away from their legs.

The Royale mantle is elongated, with a hand-finished standing collar. The collar protects the neck and the length covers most of the body; it suits both work and evenings out.

The Champagne jacket is short and golden beige. It is most comfortable in the car and between seasons, in light frost or mild winter days. In hard frost and on long walks choose a longer model, or add a warm scarf and boots. The smoky grey Astra also suits everyday wear; ask the consultant about its length.

As for whether you need separate coats for every day and for evenings out, it depends on your life. If you drive, one coat you are not afraid to wear daily is enough. If you walk a lot, choose a longer model. For evenings, a mantle with a standing collar or a floor-length coat looks formal.

How to dress in a fur coat in a Tashkent winter

Winters in Tashkent vary: sometimes around zero and damp, sometimes properly frosty. So it is best to layer what you wear under the coat.

Thin knitwear, a polo neck or a dress in a dense fabric go well under a fur coat. A very thick jumper can spoil the fit and add bulk; a thin cardigan will be cold. If you have both, choose layers by the weather.

A scarf, hat and gloves are the minimum in frost: the coat warms your torso, but head, neck and hands need covering separately. Choose non-slip soles: in winter that is about safety, not only warmth.

Take the coat off indoors: in a warm shop or office it is too hot, and then you go outside sweaty.

Fur coat in frost and snow: how not to spoil the fur

Karakul is fairly hard-wearing, but careless treatment does not help any coat. A few rules for the cold season.

If the coat gets wet in the snow, do not dry it on a radiator or with a hairdryer. Shake off the moisture without sharp movements, hang it on a wide hanger in a ventilated place at room temperature and let it dry naturally.

Do not carry a heavy bag on one shoulder: the strap rubs the fur. At home, use wide hangers. If you are unsure how to care for a particular piece, ask the consultant — after purchase we give care recommendations and offer storage and cleaning services.

Before the season starts, take the coat out of its cover in good time and air it in the shade, not in the sun.

Common mistakes and questions to ask before you buy

Many people choose by looks alone. A beautiful coat without the right length and fit will not keep you warm. Some economise on length: in frost a short piece covers less than a long one. Some do not try it on in winter clothes: you wear thick knitwear under the coat and it must sit comfortably over it. Some wait for the first hard frost and buy in a hurry. And some assume the fur warms by itself: without a scarf, hat and gloves even a good coat will not protect your hands and face.

To avoid mistakes, ask the seller a few questions — your answers decide whether you will be happy in the cold:

• What is the length of the model and how does it fit over thick clothing?
• What is the lining and how does it affect warmth?
• What fur is the coat made of and where does it come from?
• How do I care for it in winter, and how do I dry it if it gets wet?
• Can it be made to my measurements if the ready size does not fit?
• Can I leave it for storage and cleaning in spring?
