Black fur coat: the classic that suits almost everyone

A black fur coat is the most popular because it solves the main problem: you do not have to think about what to wear with it. Black goes with any colour of clothing, any bag and any shoes, and works for day and for evening.

Grey fur coat: a smoky shade with a pearlescent sheen

A grey fur coat is for those who find black too severe and light colours impractical. Grey is neutral, goes well with white, black, blue, graphite and pastel shades, and in cold weather looks refined and restrained.

Grey is especially good if you wear a lot of cool colours: pale blue, grey, white, black. It fits easily into both a business wardrobe and an evening one.

Beige fur coat and champagne: the light option for dressy looks

A beige fur coat is the lightest and most dressy of the three. A warm beige brightens the face, looks soft and very feminine, and on grey days stands out against dark jackets and coats.

Champagne is a cropped jacket in a golden-beige shade of karakul, from $3 200. The champagne colour is neither pure white nor dark beige but a warm golden tone.

Fur coat colour to suit your face: hair and skin

The colour of a fur coat sits next to your face, and it either brightens or weighs it down. A simple rule: those with cool, pinkish skin undertones are often flattered by cool shades, grey and black; those with warm, golden undertones by golden beige and dark shades. But this is a guide, not a law, so test it on yourself.

The test is simple. Stand by a window in daylight and hold the coat or its collar against your face. If your face looks fresh and your eyes bright, the colour is yours. If your skin looks grey or tired, look for another shade.

For women with dark hair, contrast is particularly striking: grey and light shades. Fair-haired women are often flattered by a black coat, against which the hair looks brighter, and by beige if you want a softer look.

If you are unsure, try the coat with the scarf you usually wear: the collar by your face is the best test of whether the colour gets on with your looks.

How to judge the colour of fur at a fitting

It is better to see the colour of a coat in person and in daylight: under shop lamps the shade often looks different, and in a photo it depends on the camera and editing. Step back from the coat and then close in: karakul plays in movement and the sheen becomes visible.

Check that the colour is even across the whole coat: no patches, reddish or faded areas. Look at the curl and the lustre: colour and pattern together create the impression of quality.
