How to care for a karakul fur coat: storage, drying and cleaning

Karakul lasts for decades with proper care: hang your coat in a cool, dry, ventilated place, never store it in plastic, and leave cleaning to fur specialists. Below are simple rules from the Luxury Furs atelier.

How to store a karakul fur coat

  • Keep it on a wide hanger so the shoulders do not lose their shape
  • Choose a cool, dry, well-ventilated place
  • Use a breathable fabric cover — not plastic, under which the fur cannot breathe
  • Do not leave the coat in the sun or near radiators and heaters
  • Do not crush it into a tight wardrobe — the fur should hang freely

What to do if the coat gets wet

Gently shake off the moisture and hang the coat on a hanger in a ventilated room at room temperature. Do not dry the fur with a hairdryer, by a radiator or in the sun — it will dry out and be damaged.

What to avoid when wearing it

  • Contact between the fur and perfume, hairspray or other fragrances
  • Rubbing from the straps of heavy bags and backpacks — the fur wears faster in those spots
  • Home washing and household cleaning products

Cleaning and storage at the atelier

Fur is best cleaned by specialists, typically at the end of the season before storage. Luxury Furs gives detailed care recommendations and offers professional storage and cleaning services; please ask our consultant for the terms.
