Which fur coat length to choose: the short answer

In short, the length of a fur coat answers one question: how do you live? If you walk a lot, drive yourself and dislike feeling wrapped up in a coat, you will probably like something shorter. If you wear your coat to the theatre, receptions and family celebrations, a long fur coat or a floor-length one is the more natural choice.

There is also a universal option: a knee-length coat, or one a little below the knee. It covers the hips, does not get in the way of your stride and is smart enough for the evening. Many women start with this length when buying a first fur coat.

Long and floor-length fur coats: when they are the best choice

A long fur coat covers the knees or goes below them, and a floor-length coat reaches almost to the ankles. The silhouette looks composed and expensive: one unbroken line from the shoulders down sets the whole look, so you do not need especially dressy clothes underneath.

The main advantage of a long coat is warmth. Covered knees and hips do not freeze in the wind, which is why people who actually walk in winter, rather than just moving from car to building, love them. The second advantage is presence: a floor-length coat looks right with an evening dress and with a classic tailored outfit alike.

There are downsides, and it is fairer to say so up front. A long coat is awkward to drive in, needs some care on stairs and in public transport, and the hem can touch wet snow on a walk. If you travel a lot by car, consider a length just above the knee.

A good example of a long coat in our collection is Noir: black karakul in a straight cut, full length. A straight cut without extra volume gives a strict, elongated line, so the coat suits both the city and a special evening.

Knee-length fur coats: the most versatile length

A knee-length fur coat is the most common answer to the question of which length is best. It is long enough to keep the wind out and to look like proper outerwear, and short enough to get into a car easily and climb stairs.

A little shorter is the mid-thigh coat. It is a half-coat in the broad sense: it covers the hips but leaves the knees free. Many people choose this length for the city, the office and everyday errands. It does not restrict movement, goes easily with trousers and skirts, and you can sit in it like an ordinary jacket.

If you are torn between knee-length and shorter, try both. Sometimes five or ten centimetres change everything: the coat looks either more formal and grown-up, or lighter and younger. The main rule is to look at yourself full length, not just at the shoulders and collar.

One caveat: among the ready-made models on the Luxury Furs site there is no coat listed specifically as knee-length. But if you want exactly that length, it can be discussed for custom tailoring, since length is one of the parameters we agree with each client.

Short fur coats, half-coats and jackets: what to wear every day

A short fur coat is the general name for anything above the knee: a half-coat, a jacket, a fur blouson. The difference between them is more about silhouette and name than any strict standard: a jacket is usually shorter and more fitted, a half-coat a little looser and slightly longer.

The advantage of a short coat is freedom. It is easy to sit in, drive in and wear to the shop or to work, and you do not have to think about the hem. For many women a half-coat or jacket becomes the everyday fur, while the long one is kept for occasions.

Short furs go well with trousers, jeans, midi dresses and boots. If you wear skirts and dresses, it is worth picturing in advance how the edge of the coat sits next to the hem of the skirt: a difference of a few centimetres looks good when it is deliberate and awkward when it is accidental.

Choosing fur coat length by height, figure and daily life

There are no universal formulas here, but a few observations help at the fitting. They do not replace the mirror; they only suggest where to start.

Petite women are often flattered by a knee-length coat or slightly below, in a straight silhouette without extra volume, which does not swallow height. A floor-length coat is possible on a small frame too, but the shoulders and sleeves must fit precisely and the hem should not look heavy. A single colour, black for example, elongates the figure.

A tall woman can wear almost any length: floor-length, long or an elongated mantle. Short models look modern and bold on a tall frame, but check in advance that the sleeves are not too short.

If you want to emphasise the waist, choose a slightly fitted silhouette or a short jacket. If you want to cover the hips, take a long straight coat or an elongated mantle, which hides the hip line completely.

A word on shoulders. Whatever length you choose, the fit across the shoulders and sleeves decides the comfort: try the coat over the clothes you will wear with it and raise your arms as if you were reaching for the steering wheel or a bag.

Scene one: you are behind the wheel every day, then a short walk to the office. A long coat gets in the way and the hem creases, while a jacket or half-coat stays in perfect shape. A short fur coat suits you here.

Scene two: you walk a lot, to the shops, on errands, greeting guests at the door. A knee-length or long coat helps here: covered legs are genuinely warmer, and this length still lets you walk freely.

Scene three: an evening out, the theatre, a banquet, wedding season. A floor-length coat or an elongated mantle looks like part of the outfit rather than just outerwear. With a floor-length dress this length almost asks to be worn.

If you want one coat for everything, choose the middle: knee-length or just above. If you can afford two, the logical pair is a short one for every day and a long one for occasions.

Checking the length at a fitting: a short list

Length in a photo and length on you are two different things. So before buying, try the coat on in person once and run through a short list.

• Wear what you will wear under the coat: a jumper, a dress, trousers, heels or boots
• Look at yourself full length, then from the side: the hemline should look confident from every angle
• Sit down: the coat should not bunch on the hips or ride up
• Raise your arms as if getting into a car: the sleeves should not pull
• Walk a few steps: the hem should not get in the way or tangle around your legs
• Ask whether the length and other parameters can be adjusted to your height
