Before you look at models, ask yourself three simple questions: where will you wear the coat most often, how do you get around the city, and what will you wear underneath. A dinner out or an evening at the theatre is one thing; a daily commute, getting in and out of a car and walking is quite another.

Length, silhouette and shade all follow from that. If the coat is for every day, choose a practical cut and a colour that works with most of your wardrobe. Size and fit: how to choose your fur coat size

Choose a fur coat by how it sits on you, not by the label. The shoulders and sleeves matter most, because they are the hardest to correct if they are wrong. The coat should feel comfortable and let you move freely, including over warm clothing.

• Shoulders: the shoulder seam should sit on the line of your own shoulder, not slide down the arm or dig into the neck
• Sleeves: raise and bend your arms, and hug yourself; the lining and fur should not pull tight, and the sleeve should not ride far up from the wrist
• Chest and waist: the coat should fasten comfortably over what you plan to wear underneath, so try it on with a sweater or a dress of medium thickness
• Hips and hem: sit on a chair; the fronts should not gape or pull
• Overall look: the coat should not hang like a sack, but it should not cling like knitwear either; the fur should stay free

Fur coat length: jacket, knee-length or full-length

How to choose a fur coat for your figure and height

These are general pointers to narrow the choice. The final decision is made at the fitting, because the same model sits differently on different people, so trust the mirror over any rule.

• Petite height: a jacket or knee-length coat with a straight silhouette and little extra volume usually looks best; full length can work if it is measured precisely for your height
• Tall height: almost any length works, including an elongated manto and full-length models
• Fuller hips: choose a straight cut and a length just below the hips so the line stays unbroken
• Slender figure: keep things balanced, since a very long, heavy coat can overwhelm the silhouette; karakul is light, so longer lengths can still work
• If nothing fits perfectly, there is custom tailoring: the piece is made to your measurements and height

Colour: black, grey or beige

A black karakul coat is the most versatile choice: it goes with any outfit and any time of day. The grey of the Astra fur coat is softer and gentler. Golden beige is the most festive and bright; it draws attention but calls for more careful wear.

Judge the colour in daylight. Under shop lighting, karakul can look different than it does outdoors. If you are unsure, step to a window or outside with the consultant.

Fur quality, lining and hardware

Even a beautiful model will not pay off if the fur itself is not good. Inspect the coat in good light and feel the fur with your hands.

• Curl: in good karakul it is even, clear and dense across the whole surface
• Sheen: natural and silky, with no dull or worn patches
• Softness: the fur should be springy and pliable, never harsh, dry or brittle
• Inside: clean leather (the pelt side) without stains; a fabric backing is a sign of faux fur
• Lining and seams: the lining should lie flat, the seams should be firm and even, with no loose threads
• Fastenings: hooks, loops and buttons should close without effort and hold securely, so fasten and unfasten them several times
• Origin: ask where the fur comes from and where the coat was made; our karakul comes directly from Bukhara

What to check at a fitting: a short checklist

• Try the coat on over the clothes you will wear with it, not over a T-shirt
• Walk around, turn, and look at yourself from behind and from the side
• Raise your arms, bend your elbows and hug your shoulders; nothing should pull
• Fasten the coat and sit down; check that the fronts and collar do not press
• Check the length: you should be able to go down stairs and get into a car comfortably
• Compare the colour in daylight
• Take your time: a good coat stays with you for many seasons, so it is worth trying two or three options
